CHAPTER 4: THE DAY OF RECKONING

Chapter 5 / 6

Six months later.

The courtroom was quiet, illuminated by high stained-glass windows and cold fluorescent lights. The air smelled of polished mahogany, old paper, and impending doom for Brandon Mitchell.

Over the past half-year, my plan had executed with military precision.

First came the criminal trial. Facing overwhelming evidence—including the emergency room forensic photos, the crystal-clear audio recording, and the testimony of the attending burn specialist—Brandon’s public defender advised him to plead guilty to felony assault and domestic battery. The judge, disgusted by Brandon’s total lack of genuine remorse during the proceedings, sentenced him to three years in state prison, with eighteen months to serve behind bars and the remainder on strict probation.

Today was the final hearing for the civil lawsuit and financial dissolution of our marriage.

Brandon sat at the defense table dressed in a faded, ill-fitting prison jumpsuit, handcuffed at the wrists and shackled at the ankles. His hair was cut short, his posture entirely broken. Sitting behind him in the gallery were Evelyn and Tiffany. They looked terrible. Tiffany was no longer wearing designer clothes; she wore cheap sweatpants and worked thirty hours a week at a fast-food drive-thru just to pay for a tiny studio apartment in the worst part of town. Evelyn had been forced to sell her beloved suburban home at a massive loss to pay for Brandon’s initial legal defense fees and was now living in a rented trailer.

I sat at the plaintiff’s table beside Victoria, dressed in a sharp, tailored navy suit. I was calm, immaculate, and entirely in control.

The judge, Honorable Judge Susan Martinez, slammed her gavel down to bring the court to order.

“We are here to finalize the civil judgment and marital property division in the matter of Chloe Mitchell v. Brandon Mitchell,” Judge Martinez announced, her eyes stern behind her glasses. “I have reviewed the extensive financial audits, medical records, and evidentiary submissions provided by the plaintiff’s counsel.”

Brandon’s civil attorney, a overworked court-appointed lawyer, stood up weakly. “Your Honor, my client is currently incarcerated and possesses no income. We ask the court for leniency regarding monetary damages, as any excessive judgment would create an undue hardship.”

Victoria stood up, her posture regal and sharp. “Your Honor, the defendant’s current lack of income is a direct result of his own criminal actions—specifically, committing a horrific felony against his wife to enforce financial abuse. Furthermore, our forensic audit proves that over six years, Mr. Mitchell secretly transferred over $62,000 from the joint marital account to his sister, Tiffany Mitchell, and his mother, Evelyn Mitchell, without my client’s knowledge or consent.”

Judge Martinez nodded, her brow furrowing deeply. “The court agrees with the plaintiff. Mr. Mitchell’s behavior was not merely negligent; it was malicious, calculated, and violent.”

She looked down at Brandon, who kept his head lowered, staring at his cuffed hands.

“Mr. Mitchell,” Judge Martinez said, her voice like thunder in the quiet room. “You treated your wife as an endless source of revenue while subjecting her to terrifying physical and emotional abuse. When she finally exercised her basic right to manage her own earnings, you attempted to disfigure her.”

The judge began reading her ruling into the record.

“Regarding the marital assets: The marital residence, valued at $450,000, is awarded entirely to the plaintiff, Chloe Mitchell. The defendant’s name will be stripped from the title immediately. All funds remaining in private accounts under the plaintiff’s name remain her sole property.”

Brandon flinched.

“Regarding civil damages,” Judge Martinez continued, “this court awards the plaintiff $250,000 in compensatory damages for medical costs, pain and suffering, and loss of income, alongside $150,000 in punitive damages to punish the defendant’s egregious conduct. Total judgment: $400,000.”

A loud gasp echoed from the gallery behind Brandon. Evelyn covered her mouth, bursting into frantic tears, while Tiffany stared in utter horror.

“Because the defendant currently lacks liquid assets,” Judge Martinez concluded, “the court orders an immediate garnishment of fifty percent of any future wages, bank accounts, tax refunds, or inheritances Mr. Mitchell receives upon his release from custody until the $400,000 debt, plus statutory interest, is paid in full. In addition, the court orders a clawback of the $62,000 fraudulently transferred to Tiffany Mitchell and Evelyn Mitchell, to be repaid to the plaintiff immediately.”

“What?!” Tiffany shrieked from the gallery, standing up in a panic. “I don’t have that money! I spent it!”

“Order in the court!” Judge Martinez warned, pointing her gavel at Tiffany. “Bailiff, remove that woman if she speaks again!”

Tiffany sank back into her seat, sobbing uncontrollably.

“This court is adjourned,” Judge Martinez said, striking the wood block with a sharp CRACK.
