Chap 0 VIEW INTRO
Every single night, my brother’s new bride walked into my bedroom carrying nothing but a pillow… and insisted on sleeping in the one place no wife would ever allow.
Right between my husband and me.
At first, I laughed it off. I told myself she was shy, homesick, maybe even struggling to adjust to married life.
But then I noticed something chilling.
She never once touched my husband.
Never tried to talk to him.
Never even closed her eyes.
She simply lay there… staring into the darkness.
My husband kept telling me the same thing.
“Ignore her. She’ll stop eventually.”
Instead, it got worse.
By the second week, I was convinced she wanted my husband.
Why else would a newly married woman abandon her own husband every night just to crawl into another couple’s bed?
I was furious.
I confronted my brother.
He looked embarrassed.
I confronted Lucía.
She lowered her head and whispered,
“In the middle… nothing can reach me.”
I thought she was losing her mind.
I had no idea she was trying to save mine.
On the seventeenth night, everything changed.
I woke to the unmistakable sound of metal.
Click.
Not loud.
Not accidental.
The sound of someone quietly unlocking something inside our bedroom.
My heart nearly stopped.
Before I could sit up, a hand grabbed mine beneath the blanket.
Lucía.
Her fingers were ice cold.
She squeezed once.
Then again.
Her message was unmistakable.
Don’t move.
Don’t speak.
Don’t let him know you’re awake.
Every instinct told me to scream.
Instead, I froze.
Seconds later, a thin strip of light slipped beneath the bedroom door.
Someone was standing outside.
Watching.
Waiting.
Then came another sound.
Tap…
Tap…
Tap…
Not knocking.
Testing.
Like someone checking whether we were asleep.
I slowly turned my head toward my husband.
Esteban hadn’t moved.
His breathing sounded calm.
Too calm.
Almost rehearsed.
Then Lucía did something that made every hair on my body stand up.
Without saying a single word, she quietly shifted her body higher between us.
She wasn’t trying to get comfortable.
She was shielding me.
Her head blocked the line of sight from the doorway.
As if she already knew exactly where someone outside was looking.
That’s when I realized something horrifying.
She had never been sleeping between us because she was afraid of nightmares.
She wasn’t protecting herself.
She was protecting me.
From the man sleeping inches away.
The same man I had trusted for twelve years.
The same man everyone in my family believed was kind, gentle, and devoted.
But Lucía knew something none of us did.
She had seen what happened after everyone else fell asleep.
And if she hadn’t insisted on sleeping between us every single night…
I might never have lived long enough to learn the truth.
