Chap 0 VIEW INTRO
THE FALL OF THE GOLDEN BOY
(Continuing immediately from the ballroom climax)
The heavy oak doors of the Plaza Hotel’s Grand Ballroom didn’t just open—they splintered inward.
“FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION! NOBODY MOVE! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!”
The music cut out instantly, replaced by the deafening shrieks of New York’s high society. Six hundred Wall Street executives, hedge fund managers, and socialites scrambled like rats on a sinking ship. Designer champagne flutes shattered under the heavy tactical boots of twenty armed FBI agents sweeping the floor.
On the stage, the massive LED screens were still looping the infrared nanny-cam footage: Julian Thorne crushing potassium chloride into Arthur Sterling’s Dom Pérignon.
Julian stood frozen, his immaculate Tom Ford tuxedo suddenly feeling like a straightjacket. His breathing turned ragged, his eyes darting frantically toward the stage exits.
“This is deep-fake!” Julian screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria as two federal agents vaulted onto the stage, weapons drawn. “She engineered this! She’s a clinical sociopath! Turn those screens off!”
“Julian Thorne,” a senior FBI Special Agent said, grabbing Julian’s wrist and twisting it hard behind his back. The cold steel of handcuffs clicked shut with a sound that echoed through the microphone still standing on the podium. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, and violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. You have the right to remain silent…”
A few feet away, Maya was on her hands and knees, frantically trying to crawl behind the silk drapery of the stage. Her designer gown was soaked in spilled champagne.
“I didn’t know!” Maya shrieked as a female agent dragged her to her feet by her arms. Her mascara ran down her face in black, jagged tears. “Julian forced me! He told me Arthur was already dying! I just wanted my share of the trust! Elena, tell them! I’m your cousin!”
Elena stood at the center of the chaos, untouchable in her pristine white Vera Wang gown. The stage lights caught the cold, diamond-hard glint in her eyes. She didn’t flinch at the screaming. She didn’t look at Maya.
She walked slowly toward Julian, who was being forced to his knees by two agents.
“Elena…” Julian choked out, looking up at her. The arrogant conqueror was gone; all that remained was a pathetic, sweating fraud. “Please. We can fix this. I loved you. I swear to God, I loved you.”
Elena stopped inches from him. She reached down, took the silk boutonnière from his lapel, and dropped it onto the floor, crushing it beneath her heel.
“My father built Sterling BioTech from a single laboratory in Queens while you were still cheating on your SATs, Julian,” Elena said, her voice low enough that only he and the arresting agents could hear. “You thought because I wore white, I was a dove. You forgot I’m Arthur Sterling’s daughter. I don’t bleed. I settle accounts.”
She turned to the Special Agent in charge. “Take them out through the front lobby. Let the paparazzi get a good look at Wall Street’s newest power couple.”
