Chap 0 VIEW INTRO
THE $10,000-A-PLATE BETRAYAL
INT. THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART (TEMPLE OF DENDUR) – NIGHT
The glass walls of the Temple of Dendur reflect the flashing cameras of New York’s press corps. Five hundred of the city’s most powerful judges, senators, and corporate billionaires sit at tables covered in white linen and crystal. It is the most anticipated political fundraiser of the decade.
On the stage stands MARCUS VANCE (40, impossibly handsome, charismatic, wearing a tailored Ralph Lauren tuxedo). He is New York’s “Golden Boy,” the leading candidate for District Attorney.
Standing a few feet behind him is his wife, VICTORIA VANCE (35, draped in a stunning emerald-green Alexander McQueen gown). To the public, she is merely the graceful, supportive wife. But among the inner circle of Wall Street, Victoria is known as the “Undefeated Queen of Defense”—the brilliant legal mind who built Marcus’s law firm from scratch while he took the credit in the spotlight.
“For too long, New York has been drowning in corruption,” Marcus declares into the microphone, his voice echoing off the ancient Egyptian stones. “When I am elected District Attorney next month, I promise you one thing: no one is above the law. Not the politicians. Not the billionaires. And certainly not the corrupt lawyers who help them hide their dirty money!”
The crowd erupts into thunderous applause.
Off to the side of the stage, Marcus’s campaign manager and secret mistress, CHLOE SINCLAIR (28), catches Marcus’s eye. She raises her glass of champagne, offering him a slow, knowing smirk.
Victoria catches the look. She doesn’t flinch. Her face is a mask of absolute, chilling calm.
Two hours ago, in the study of their Upper East Side townhouse, Victoria bypassed the firewall on Marcus’s private safe. What she found wasn’t just photos of his affair with Chloe. It was a signed, secret immunity deal with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
For three years, Marcus had been taking millions in illegal campaign donations from the Russian mob. When the FBI closed in, Marcus and Chloe forged Victoria’s signature on dozens of offshore holding accounts, framing her as the mastermind behind the money laundering.
Marcus’s plan was brilliant: tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM, the FBI would raid their home and arrest Victoria. Marcus would play the heartbroken, morally upright husband who refused to protect his own wife from justice. The scandal would guarantee him a landslide victory in the election.
As the applause fades, Marcus turns to Victoria, extending his hand with a rehearsed, camera-ready smile.
“And now,” Marcus says, his voice dripping with false warmth, “I want to introduce the woman who has been my rock, my moral compass, and the love of my life. My wife, Victoria.”
The crowd cheers. Victoria steps up to the podium.
ACT II: THE CROSS-EXAMINATION
Victoria adjusts the microphone. The venue falls silent. She looks out at the sea of billionaires, politicians, and reporters. Then, she turns her head slightly, locking eyes with Marcus.
“Thank you, Marcus,” Victoria begins, her voice smooth, articulate, and carrying an icy edge that makes Chloe’s smile instantly falter. “You speak so eloquently about integrity. About shining a light into the dark corners of New York.”
Marcus beams, nodding for the cameras.
“In the legal profession,” Victoria continues, pacing slowly across the stage, “we have a term called Premeditated Malice. It refers to a crime committed not out of passion, but out of cold, calculated calculation. For example… when a man takes seven million dollars in illicit campaign funds from organized crime, and then spends six months forging his wife’s digital signatures to frame her for federal wire fraud.”
The silence in the Temple of Dendur becomes suffocating. Someone drops a silver fork. It clatters loudly against the stone floor.
Marcus’s smile freezes. The blood drains from his face. He takes a step forward, his voice dropping to a panicked hiss through his clenched teeth.
“Victoria, what the hell are you doing? Sit down right now—”
Victoria ignores him completely, turning her body to face the bank of live television cameras broadcasting to millions of viewers across the state.
“My husband just told you that no one is above the law,” Victoria says, her voice rising with unmistakable, judicial authority. “He told you that tomorrow morning, he wants to clean up this city. But why wait until tomorrow, Marcus? Why not start tonight?”
Victoria reaches into the sleek clutch of her evening bag and pulls out a sleek black USB drive, holding it up to the stage lights.
“Three hours ago, I took a little trip to the United States Attorney General’s office,” Victoria announces calmly. “I handed over the original, un-encrypted server logs from Marcus’s private campaign computers. Logs that prove not only did Marcus take the bribes, but his lovely campaign manager, Chloe Sinclair, personally established the offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands.”
Off-stage, Chloe lets out a choked gasp, dropping her champagne flute. She turns to run toward the VIP exit, but stops dead in her tracks.
ACT III: THE CHECKMATE CANDIDATE
The heavy glass doors of the Temple of Dendur swing open.
A dozen federal agents in windbreakers marked FBI – PUBLIC CORRUPTION UNIT march into the hall, flanked by armed U.S. Marshals. The crowd screams, scrambling out of their way as the agents surround the stage and block every exit.
“This is insane!” Marcus roars, losing his mind as the cameras zoom in on his sweating, terrified face. He lunges toward the microphone. “She’s lying! She’s a criminal! Arrest her! I am the next District Attorney of New York!”
“You’re not the next District Attorney, Marcus,” Victoria says, her voice cutting through his hysteria like a blade as two FBI agents grab his arms and force his hands behind his back. “You’re just Docket Number 440-B in the Federal District Court of Manhattan.”
The lead FBI agent slaps the heavy steel handcuffs onto Marcus’s wrists. The sharp CLICK echoes through the sound system.
As they drag Marcus across the stage, he looks back at Victoria, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and disbelief.
“Victoria! You can’t do this to me! We built this life together! Who is going to defend you when they tear our firm apart?!”
Victoria stops at the edge of the stage, looking down at her handcuffed husband as reporters shove microphones toward them, flashbulbs exploding like fireworks in the background.
She gives him a slow, devastatingly cold smile.
“I don’t need anyone to defend me, Marcus,” Victoria says softly, adjusting the collar of her McQueen gown. “Because as of five minutes ago, the Governor just appointed me as Special Prosecutor for your case.”
She leans in close, whispering her final words into his ear before the agents drag him away into the flashing red and blue lights outside:
“The defense rests. Let’s see how you do on cross-examination.”
