Chapter 1 – THE SILENT BROADCAST
The silence that followed the silent alarm was deafening.
My thumb pressed into the hard, red center of the emergency button hidden under my pillow. It didn’t ring with an audible buzzer inside the room; it wasn’t designed to alert an attacker. It was the high-priority, silent distress trigger directly connected to the hospital’s central security desk, the floor nurses’ station, and the Chicago Police Department’s dedicated medical emergency response line.
And it did something else.
Three months before my kidneys failed, when I first realized my family was stealing money from my personal accounts through forged checks, I had installed a high-definition, wide-angle hidden camera inside the digital wall clock facing my hospital bed. It was a self-powered, cloud-connected device that broadcasted directly to an encrypted server—and live-streamed to my primary physician, my estate attorney, and my personal cloud storage.
The moment that panic button clicked, the live stream didn’t just record. It auto-broadcasted an emergency high-priority video link directly to every phone on my pre-set emergency contact list, including my attorney, Arthur Vance, and the lead administrator of Lakefront Medical Center.
My mother stood over me, her chest heaving, her eyes wild with an unhinged, predatory fury. Blood—my blood—was dripping from the corner of the heavy plastic blood pressure monitor in her hands, staining her pristine camel-colored coat.
“Sign the papers, Maya!” she spat, her voice dropping into a desperate, razor-sharp whisper. “Sign them now, or I swear to God I will tell the doctors you suffered a manic episode and tried to attack me!”
“Mom, stop! There’s blood everywhere!” Connor stammered, backing toward the corner of the room, his face pale as chalk. He wasn’t worried about my life; he was worried about the blood splattering onto his designer hoodie. “If someone comes in—”
“Shut up, Connor!” my mother snapped, never taking her eyes off me. “Your father is holding the door! She’s weak! She can’t fight us! Sign the transfer forms, Maya, or you won’t live to see the transplant list!”
My father, Richard, kept his back pressed firmly against the small rectangular window of the hospital door, looking out into the hallway to ensure no nurses were approaching. “Hurry up, Evelyn,” he muttered, his voice cold, hollow, and completely devoid of humanity. “We don’t have all day.”
I lay on the thin white mattress, feeling the sticky warmth of blood pooling against my neck, running down my collarbone, and soaking into the front of my hospital gown. The pain in my head roared like a jet engine, but my mind was terrifyingly clear.
“You really think… money… will save Connor?” I rasped, my throat raw, each breath burning my chest.
“Connor has a future!” Evelyn screamed, raising the heavy plastic block once more. “You are broken! You’re a dying, useless drain on this family! Give him his money!”
Before she could bring the monitor down a second time, the heavy wooden door behind my father exploded inward.
The force of the blow slammed Richard forward onto his knees. Four heavy-duty Chicago Police officers in tactical gear, accompanied by three hospital security guards, burst into the room with drawn weapons and tasers.
“POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!” the lead officer roared, his voice shaking the glass windows.
Evelyn froze, the blood-stained monitor suspended in the air above her head. Her jaw dropped, her eyes wide with utter shock. “W-what? Officers, no! You don’t understand—”
“DROP THE WEAPON!” two officers shouted in unison, stepping forward with tasers aimed directly at her chest.
Panicking, Evelyn dropped the blood pressure monitor. It hit the linoleum floor with a heavy, sickening thud, shattering into plastic fragments and spraying dried blood across the tiles.
“On the floor! All three of you! NOW!”
Within seconds, the room descended into absolute chaos. Two officers grabbed Richard, slamming him against the wall and forcing his arms behind his back. Another officer wrestled Connor to the ground. Connor screamed, his face pressed against the bloody floor tiles, weeping like a terrified child.
