CHAP 0. VIEW INTRO
“My Family Held My Funeral While I Was Still Alive… Then I Walked Through the Front Door Holding My Daughter.”
I survived eight months in a war zone.
Every night, I dreamed of one thing.
Going home.
Holding my wife.
Meeting the daughter she had promised would be waiting for me.
I had no idea…
…my family had already buried me.
Not my body.
My name.
When our convoy was ambushed overseas, military headquarters temporarily listed me as Missing in Action.
Three weeks later…
someone changed my status to Killed in Action.
I never knew.
No one ever told me.
By the time I finally stepped off the military transport plane, I was carrying nothing but a duffel bag, an old teddy bear I had bought for my little girl, and a folded American flag that had stayed with me through every mission.
I couldn’t wait to surprise my family.
No phone call.
No warning.
Just one unforgettable homecoming.
When the taxi pulled into my neighborhood, something immediately felt wrong.
The driveway was overflowing with expensive cars.
Black ribbons hung from the porch.
Fresh white flowers covered the front yard.
People dressed entirely in black stood silently outside my house.
Then I saw it.
A giant framed photograph of…
me.
Standing beside dozens of funeral wreaths.
For a second…
I honestly wondered if I had come to the wrong address.
A pastor was speaking softly near the front steps.
“…Today we honor Sergeant Daniel Carter, a devoted husband, a loving father, and an American hero…”
My own funeral.
I stood there frozen.
Still breathing.
Still alive.
Listening to strangers talk about me in the past tense.
Nobody noticed me.
Not yet.
Then the front door opened.
My wife, Olivia…
walked outside wearing a black dress.
But she wasn’t crying.
She was smiling.
Standing beside her…
was my younger brother, Ethan.
His hand rested comfortably on the small of her back.
The way only a husband would touch his wife.
My stomach dropped.
Then my four-year-old daughter ran out onto the porch.
She looked right at me.
Our eyes met.
For a heartbeat…
the whole world stopped.
She dropped the stuffed rabbit she was holding.
“Daddy?”
Her tiny voice echoed across the silent yard.
Every head turned toward me.
Olivia’s smile vanished.
Ethan’s face turned ghost white.
Someone dropped a glass.
It shattered across the stone walkway.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Olivia whispered just loudly enough for everyone to hear…
“That’s impossible…”
Because according to every document she had signed…
I had been dead for over three months.
