OPERATION: UNTOUCHABLE

Chapter 2: The Fall of the Dominoes

Chapter 3 / 6

The arrest of Grant Hart was not an isolated incident; it was the pull of a single thread that unraveled a multi-billion-dollar sweater woven with corruption, treason, and greed.

By 06:15 AM, while Grant was being dragged down the hospital service elevator in handcuffs, simultaneous federal raids were occurring across eleven major cities. Over three hundred federal agents from the DCIS, FBI, IRS Criminal Investigation Division, and the Department of Homeland Security were executing ninety-four sealed search warrants.

From my hospital room, transformed in a matter of hours into a temporary secure command post, I monitored the live tactical feeds streaming across three encrypted laptops setup by my deputy agent, Mark Ramirez.

“Target Two secured in Arlington,” Ramirez reported, tapping rapidly on his keyboard. “Brigadier General Thomas Miller was taken into custody at his estate. Federal agents recovered four million dollars in bearer bonds hidden in his gun safe.”

“What about Apex Logistics?” I asked, wincing as the flight nurse adjusted my pain medication drip.

“Raid successful,” Ramirez confirmed with a grin. “IRS-CI seized all servers, financial ledgers, and offshore routing keys. Their CFO tried to burn the physical paper trail in an industrial incinerator, but tactical teams breached the building before the fire took hold. We have everything, Evelyn. The entire paper trail connects directly to Grant’s personal accounts.”

“Good,” I muttered, staring at the screen showing live footage of Grant being pushed into the back of an unmarked black SUV outside the hospital lower entrance. “What about the secondary targets?”

Ramirez hesitated, looking at me with a cautious expression. “Your family, Evelyn.”

I took a slow breath, feeling the sharp pinch in my lung. “What about them?”

“Your parents’ estate purchase in Palm Beach. The wire transfer of six hundred thousand dollars for their down payment was routed through one of Grant’s shell companies—specifically, a account flagged for laundered defense funds. When we froze Grant’s assets at 0600 hours, that wire transfer was recalled by the Federal Reserve.”

I closed my eyes for a brief moment. I remembered my mother’s voice on the phone just hours ago: ‘You’ve always exaggerated… You owe us after everything we’ve done for you.’

“And the loan guarantee?” I asked coldly.

“Revoked,” Ramirez replied. “Since your federal salary and clearance credentials were listed as the primary guarantee, and you officially reported financial fraud and domestic abuse, the bank terminated the mortgage agreement immediately. The seller has already placed the estate back on the market.”

Before I could reply, the secure landline on my bedside table began to ring. Ramirez looked at the caller ID and raised an eyebrow. “It’s your mother.”

I gestured for him to put it on speakerphone.

“Evelyn?!” My mother’s voice shrieked through the speaker, high-pitched, hysterical, and stripped of all its usual refined composure. “Evelyn, what on earth is happening?! The bank just called! They cancelled our purchase agreement! They said our accounts are under a federal freeze! And your father’s luxury sedan was just towed from the driveway by federal marshals!”

I listened in complete silence.

“Evelyn! Are you listening to me?!” she screamed. “Call Grant right now! Tell him to fix this! The real estate agent told us that Grant was arrested by federal agents! That’s absurd! He’s a respected businessman! Speak to your superiors at that stupid government office and clear this up!”

“Mom,” I said, my voice dead calm.

“What?!” she snapped.

“Grant isn’t going to fix this. Grant is facing forty years in a federal maximum-security prison for treason, grand larceny, and defense fraud.”

Silence hung on the line for three long seconds.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” my father’s voice suddenly boomed in the background, grabbing the phone from my mother. “Evelyn, I don’t care what kind of fight you and Grant had! You do not mess with our family’s financial standing! Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is?! Our neighbors saw the marshals tow the car!”

“You told me to handle my own marriage,” I said softly into the microphone. “You told me I exaggerated when he broke my ribs and left me to die on the floor.”

“Evelyn, that’s personal!” my father shouted. “Business is business! You use your position to clear our name right now, or so help me—”

“Father,” I interrupted, my tone icy enough to freeze fire. “I didn’t just investigate Grant. I investigated everyone who took money from his offshore accounts. That six hundred thousand dollars you used for your estate down payment? It was stolen from the U.S. Military’s armored vehicle maintenance budget. You accepted laundered federal money.”

“We… we didn’t know!” my mother gasped in the background.

“Ignorance is not a defense under Title 18 of the United States Code,” I replied cleanly. “In approximately ten minutes, two IRS Criminal Investigation agents will arrive at your front door with a federal subpoena for all your financial records over the last five years. I suggest you retain a defense lawyer. Though, considering all your joint accounts were co-signed by me, and I have officially revoked my authorization… you won’t be able to afford a very good one.”

“Evelyn! You can’t do this to your own parents!” my mother sobbed frantically. “We gave you everything!”

“You gave me a bill,” I said. “And today, it’s paid in full.”

I tapped the screen, disconnecting the call, and handed the phone back to Ramirez.

“Issue the press release,” I ordered, turning my attention back to the laptop displaying the federal court docket. “Let the public know that Operation Black Ledger is live. I want every news station in the country reporting on Grant Hart’s arrest before the stock market opens.”
