THE SILENT AUDITOR: Blood on the Marble

CHAPTER 2: THE CRUMBLING FACADE

Chapter 3 / 6

Evan stood completely paralyzed, his custom Armani tuxedo jacket ruined by the sudden gust of dirt and leaves kicked up by the helicopter’s rotor wash. His meticulously styled hair was disheveled, and his face was drained of all color as he stared at the armed federal officers swarming the estate grounds. Beside him, Victoria was screeching at the top of her lungs, waving her manicured hands in the face of a stoic federal agent.

“Do you have any idea who I am?!” Victoria roared, her voice shrill and trembling with rage. “This is private property! This is the Bellacourt Vineyard! I will have your badges! I will call the Governor!”

“Ma’am, step back and keep your hands where we can see them,” the agent replied, his rifle held at low-ready, completely unbothered by her hysterics.

“Evan! Do something!” Victoria demanded, grabbing her son’s arm. “Call our legal counsel! Call Arthur! Tell him these animals are trespassing on Celeste’s engagement night!”

Evan didn’t move. His eyes were wide, fixed on the gurney as the paramedics pushed me rapidly across the white marble floor toward the courtyard where the helicopter sat running. His gaze swept over the pool of blood dripping from the edge of the board, then met mine through the clear plastic of my oxygen mask. For a brief second, I saw a flash of realization cross his face—not of remorse, but of absolute, terror-stricken comprehension. He looked at the heavy black tactical vests, the AG patches, and the tactical satellite phone still clutched in Mara Voss’s gloved hand as she stepped out of the service corridor behind us.

“Claire…?” Evan stammered, his voice cracking as he took an instinctual step forward. “What… what is this? What did you do?”

“Stand down, Mr. Bellacourt,” Special Agent Mara Voss snapped, walking down the steps with absolute authority. She held up a thick, red-stamped federal document. “Federal Warrant 409-B. Executed by the State Attorney General’s Organized Crime and Fraud Task Force.”

Victoria gasped, her hand flying to her pearl necklace. “A warrant?! For what?! My daughter is getting married! This is a minor administrative dispute! My daughter’s fiancé is the heir to—”

“Your daughter’s fiancé is going to need a very good lawyer, Mrs. Bellacourt, but right now, you need to worry about yourself,” Mara said calmly. She looked toward two tactical officers. “Secure the perimeter. Nobody enters or leaves the main residence. Secure all electronic devices, servers, and paper files.”

“You can’t do this!” Evan yelled, his fake, charm-brokered composure entirely collapsing. He tried to puff out his chest, pointing an accusing finger at Mara. “My wife had an extreme hysterical episode because of her pregnancy! She’s mentally unstable! She forced her way into a restricted area, and we were trying to keep her safe until an ambulance arrived—”

“Save it for the judge, Evan,” Mara interrupted, her tone dropping into ice-cold contempt. “We have the audio recording from her open satellite line. We have your voice telling her to drink tap water and calm down while she was hemorrhaging on a locked restroom floor. That’s Depraved Indifference, Aggravated Assault, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.”

Evan’s face went completely ash-white. “Audio recording…?”

“And as for your financial empire,” Mara added, signaling to another team of agents who were currently hauling a heavy, steel-reinforced briefcase out of the trunk of Evan’s Audi, “Senior Auditor Claire Bellacourt spent nine months decrypting your offshore accounts. We have every single wire transfer signed by your hand. Twelve million dollars siphoned from public pension funds, laundered through this very vineyard.”

A collective gasp echoed across the courtyard from the remaining guests who hadn’t managed to flee. Celeste, clad in her $40,000 silk dress, stood near the edge of the dance floor, her mascara running down her face in dark streaks as she stared at her brother in total horror.

“Evan…?” Celeste whispered, her voice carrying over the hum of the idling engines. “What is she talking about? What did you do with the money?”

“Celeste, shut up!” Victoria screamed, turning her fury on her daughter before swinging back to face Mara. “This is a lie! That pathetic little accountant manipulated the books! She set us up! She was poor, desperate, and jealous of our family!”

Mara didn’t even argue. She simply pulled a pair of heavy, steel hand-restraints from her utility belt and stepped up to Evan.

“Evan Bellacourt, you are under arrest for Grand Larceny, Wire Fraud, Money Laundering, Racketeering, and Aggravated Assault,” Mara stated clearly, snapping the metal cuffs around his wrists with a sharp, echoing click.

“Claire!” Evan screamed, turning toward the gurney as the paramedics began loading me into the side door of the Black Hawk helicopter. “Claire, tell them! Tell them it’s a mistake! I loved you! I did this for our future! Claire!”

I didn’t answer. I looked down at him through the glass of the helicopter window as the rotor blades picked up speed, blowing the expensive floral arrangements and decorative banners of the Bellacourt Vineyard into shreds. I closed my eyes, letting the oxygen wash over me, leaving Evan to face the nightmare he had built for himself.
