CHAP 0. VIEW INTRO
Forty minutes before my sister’s wedding, I went into labor. Instead of calling my husband or an ambulance, my own mother ripped my phone from my hands, locked me inside a storage room, and told me not to ruin the ceremony. Hours later, I woke up in a hospital bed… only to learn the lie she’d told the paramedics—a lie so horrifying that the entire room fell silent.
Forty minutes before my sister Madison was supposed to walk down the aisle, my water exploded across the polished marble floor of the bridal suite.
At first, everyone just stared.
The makeup artist froze with a lipstick brush in midair.
The bridesmaids backed away.
Madison clutched her bouquet, her face draining of color—not because I was in labor, but because she thought I was about to steal the attention from her wedding.
Then my mother slowly turned toward me.
Her expression wasn’t worried.
It was furious.
“Emily,” she said through clenched teeth. “Not today.”
A brutal contraction ripped through my body so hard I nearly collapsed.
“I need my phone,” I gasped. “Call Nathan… please…”
Instead of helping me, Mom lunged toward the vanity, grabbed my phone before I could reach it, and shoved it into her purse.
“Mom… give it back!”
Her eyes were ice cold.
“You always find a way to make everything about you.”
Another contraction hit.
I screamed.
Guests outside kept laughing.
The string quartet continued playing as if nothing was happening.
Before anyone could react, my mother grabbed me by the arm and dragged me down a narrow hallway of the historic estate.
Barefoot.
Crying.
My pale blue bridesmaid dress soaked with amniotic fluid.
I begged her to stop.
She didn’t.
She yanked open a dusty storage room near the kitchen, shoved me inside, and looked straight into my terrified eyes.
“Stay here until the ceremony is over.”
Then she smiled.
A cold, terrifying smile.
“Don’t ruin your sister’s biggest day.”
The door slammed shut.
The lock clicked.
I was trapped.
At first, I thought she’d come back in a minute.
She didn’t.
I pounded on the door until my hands bled.
I screamed until my voice disappeared.
Nobody came.
The thick walls swallowed every cry while, somewhere outside, hundreds of guests applauded as my sister said her vows.
Inside that tiny storage room…
I was giving birth alone.
Contractions came one after another.
The pain became unbearable.
I found an old towel on the floor and bit down on it just to stop myself from screaming.
Blood spread across the concrete.
My vision blurred.
I remember praying.
I remember whispering my baby’s name.
I remember hearing wedding applause echo through the walls…
…right before everything went black.
When I opened my eyes again…
White ceiling.
Hospital lights.
Monitors beeping beside me.
For one terrifying second, I couldn’t remember whether my baby had survived.
Nathan was sitting beside my bed.
His suit was wrinkled.
His hands were shaking.
His eyes were red from crying.
Across the room stood my mother.
The same woman who had locked me away.
Now mascara streamed down her face as she sobbed uncontrollably.
“Emily…” she whispered.
“I’m so sorry.”
“Please…”
“Please don’t call the police.”
“I panicked.”
“I thought there was still time.”
Nathan slowly stood up.
His face was completely expressionless.
When he finally spoke, his voice was calm…
…which somehow made every word even more terrifying.
“She didn’t just lock Emily in that room.”
The room fell silent.
“She also lied to the paramedics.”
Everyone looked at him.
Nathan swallowed hard before continuing.
“When they arrived…”
“…Celeste told them Emily had been drinking…”
“…that she was hiding because she was embarrassed…”
“…and that she was probably overreacting.”
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Even my mother’s sobbing stopped.
No one said a single word.
Because everyone in that room suddenly realized…
What happened to me wasn’t a mistake.
It was a choice.
