CHAP 0. VIEW INTRO
Six months after the divorce, my ex-husband suddenly called to invite me to his wedding. I replied, ‘I just gave birth. I’m not going anywhere.’ Half an hour later, he rushed to my hospital room in a panic…
My ex-husband invited me to his wedding six months after our divorce, as if betrayal came with a printed invitation and a champagne toast. I looked down at the newborn sleeping against my chest and said, “I just gave birth, Adrian. I’m not going anywhere.”
There was silence on the line.
Then his voice changed.
“You… what?”
“A baby,” I said calmly. “Seven pounds, two ounces. Healthy. Goodbye.”
I ended the call.
Thirty minutes later, Adrian Vale burst into my private hospital room without knocking, his tuxedo jacket half-buttoned and his face drained of color. Behind him came his mother, Celeste, dripping diamonds and fury, and his fiancée, Vanessa, still wearing a white rehearsal dress.
Adrian stared at the bassinet.
“Whose baby is that?”
I almost laughed.
Six months earlier, he had stood in our kitchen with Vanessa wrapped around his arm and told me our marriage had been “a bad investment.” Celeste had watched from the doorway, smiling while Adrian handed me divorce papers already prepared by the family lawyer.
“You’ll take the apartment and nothing else,” he had said. “The company shares were never really yours.”
He believed that because I had spent five years working quietly behind the scenes at Vale Biomedical, I had no power. He forgot that I had designed the patent portfolio, negotiated the licensing contracts, and kept copies of every financial authorization he had signed. When reporters praised his genius, he smiled for cameras while I fixed the disasters he created after midnight.
He also forgot one other thing.
The night before he announced his affair, I had learned I was pregnant.
I had kept silent, not from weakness, but because Adrian had already begun moving company assets into shell accounts controlled by Vanessa’s father. I needed time to prove it. Telling him about the baby would have given him one more weapon to use against me.
Now Adrian moved toward the bassinet.
I stepped between them.
“Don’t touch him.”
Celeste’s eyes sharpened. “Him?”
Adrian looked at the baby’s face, then at me. The child had his dark hair, his cleft chin, and the same rare silver-gray eyes that ran through the Vale family.
His knees nearly buckled.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“You didn’t ask whether I was carrying your child before you threw me out.”
Vanessa folded her arms. “This is obviously a trick. She timed this to ruin our wedding.”
I reached for the folder beside my bed.
“No,” I said. “Your wedding was already ruined. You just haven’t checked your phones yet.”..
