"Six Months After the Divorce: His Wedding, My Empire"

Chapter 1: The Paper Trail

Chapter 2 / 6

The room went so still you could hear the soft, rhythmic breathing of my baby boy in the bassinet. Vanessa’s sneer faltered, her manicured fingers tightening against the fabric of her silk gown. Celeste, ever the matriarch of image and status, took a slow, deliberate step forward, her diamond necklace catching the sterile fluorescent light of the hospital room.

“What are you talking about, Evelyn?” Adrian’s voice trembled, a fraction of his usual smooth, commanding tone slipping away. His eyes darted from me to the manila folder in my hands, then back to his son.

“You were so focused on securing your father-in-law’s venture capital for the expansion that you forgot to audit Vale Biomedical’s secondary compliance records,” I said, opening the folder. I pulled out a single sheet of paper—a printed notification from the Securities and Exchange Commission, stamped with a time marker from forty-five minutes ago.

I held it up. “At 4:00 PM today, the federal court froze all domestic accounts belonging to Apex Holdings—your dear father’s shell company, Vanessa.”

Vanessa’s face went chalky white. She fumbled with her clutch, pulling out her phone. Her screen was already lit up with a string of urgent, frantic missed calls from her family’s chief financial officer.

“That’s impossible,” Adrian stuttered, rushing toward me, his composure fully shattering. “Apex is an offshore partner! How did you even—?”

“Because I built the infrastructure, Adrian,” I said, my voice ice cold. “When you stripped me of my executive title and handed my seat to Vanessa, you assumed I left empty-handed. But every contract, every intellectual property transfer, and every unauthorized wire transfer you signed over the past eighteen months required my cryptographic clearance signature. You didn’t delete my access; you just removed my name from the directory.”

Celeste lunged forward, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. “You wretched girl. You’re trying to destroy my family on my son’s wedding day!”

“Your family destroyed itself the moment Adrian confused my loyalty for weakness,” I replied, looking Celeste dead in the eye. “And as for the wedding… I suggest you cancel the caterers.”

Adrian looked like he had been struck by lightning. He took a shaky step toward the bassinet again, his hands trembling. “Evelyn… he’s a Vale. He’s my son. My heir.”

“He is my son,” I corrected, placing my body firmly between him and the baby. “His name is Leo. And his birth certificate bears only one parent’s name. Yours isn’t on it.”

“I’ll fight you for him!” Adrian shouted, the panic finally overriding his pride. “I have the money, the lawyers, the—”

“You had the money,” I interrupted softly. “As of twenty minutes ago, Vale Biomedical’s board of directors convened an emergency meeting. They’ve suspended you as CEO pending the federal audit. You are currently unemployed, under investigation, and broke.”

Vanessa let out a sharp, choked gasp. She looked at Adrian as if he were suddenly covered in poison. “Adrian… is this true? What is she talking about? My father’s accounts are frozen?!”

“Shut up, Vanessa!” Adrian snapped, turning on her.

“Don’t you dare speak to her like that!” Celeste interjected, but the unity of their pathetic trio was already disintegrating into chaotic shouting right in front of me.

I pressed the call button on the hospital remote. Within ten seconds, two heavy-set hospital security guards opened the door.

“Ma’am?” one of the guards asked, looking at the hysterical group.

“These people are intruding on my private recovery suite,” I said calmly, leaning back against my pillows and drawing Leo gently into my arms. “Please escort them out. They have a trial to prepare for.”
