"Six Months After the Divorce: His Wedding, My Empire"

Chapter 2: The Shattered Empire

Chapter 3 / 6

The scandal broke like a tidal wave across the financial news the following morning. Headlines screamed from every major portal: VALE BIOMEDICAL CEO OUSTED AMID SEC FRAUD INVESTIGATION ON WEDDING DAY.

While the press tore Adrian’s public persona to shreds, I spent my second day in the quiet sanctuary of the maternity ward. My long-time friend and legal counsel, Marcus Vance, walked into the room carrying a fresh cup of decaf coffee and a thick stack of legal briefs.

“You hit them hard, Evie,” Marcus said with a rare, quiet smile as he sat down in the visitor’s chair. “The board didn’t even debate it. When I delivered the encrypted ledger showing Adrian had diverted forty million dollars into Vanessa’s father’s offshore accounts, they voted unanimously to remove him.”

“What about the patent rights?” I asked, nursing Leo as he slept soundly.

“They’re yours,” Marcus confirmed. “Since you registered the core gene-mapping patents under your personal corporate entity prior to the marriage, Adrian’s attempt to license them to Apex Holdings constitutes grand larceny and patent theft. The board wants to meet with you next week. They want to offer you the CEO chair.”

I looked out the hospital window at the skyline of the city. Six months ago, I was walking out of a courtroom with a suitcase, a broken heart, and a unborn child, while Adrian and Celeste laughed on the courthouse steps. They believed they had stripped me of my legacy. They didn’t realize I was the legacy.

Later that afternoon, the door opened softly. I expected a nurse, but instead, Celeste Vale walked in. Gone were the diamonds and the immaculate designer suit. She looked frail, her makeup hastily applied, her eyes hollowed by exhaustion and desperation.

“Evelyn,” she whispered, holding her leather handbag tightly against her chest.

“You’re trespassing, Celeste,” I said, not bothering to move from my chair.

“Please… just hear me out,” she pleaded, taking a tentative step into the room. The arrogance that had defined her for five years had vanished entirely. “Adrian is in holding. The federal agents picked him up at his hotel this morning. They’re talking about federal prison, Evelyn. Years in prison.”

“He committed federal crimes, Celeste. Actions have consequences.”

“He made a mistake!” she cried out, her voice cracking. “He was foolish! That girl, Vanessa, and her father manipulated him! You know Adrian… he’s emotional, he’s ambitious, but he loved you once!”

“He didn’t love me,” I said coldly. “He loved my brain, my labor, and the prestige I built for his company. And when he thought he had squeezed every drop of value out of me, he traded me in for a younger woman with a wealthy father.”

Celeste fell to her knees beside my chair, weeping openly. “Please, Evelyn. You have the original clearance keys. You can testify that it was an oversight—a administrative error! If you do that, the criminal charges will be dropped. I will give you anything. I’ll make Adrian sign over all his remaining assets to you and the baby!”

I looked down at the woman who had spent years making me feel like an outsider in my own home, who had insulted my modest background, and who had celebrated my quiet eviction.

“Get up, Celeste,” I said quietly. “You look pathetic.”

She looked up, shock registering in her eyes.

“I am not saving Adrian,” I said, leaning down so my voice was inches from her face. “He built his own gallows. Now he can hang from them.”
